FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

Our youngest karateka can start between 3 and 4 years old in the Mini Dragons classes.

The Dragons Program starts at age 4 and goes up to age 7.

Every student needs to have a black or white karate uniform and a white belt. Safety equipment for sparring will also be needed, and the specific gear requirements depend on the belt level of the student.

All uniforms and equipment can be purchased upon registration with Promar Karate.

It depends on the program you’re in, if equipment was needed this season (the safety gear typically lasts at least 2-3 years), if you progress in belt level, and if you train for the season or if you add on summer training as well.

Here’s a “guestimate” answer when we don’t know the variables: A Dragon student who is with us for the 2026/2027 Season is likely going to spend around $750+hst on classes, equipment, and a grading, vs a Jr Warrior in the Core Program taking 2 classes/week might be around $1000+hst, vs an invested student in the Kaizen
Program who has unlimited classes, comes to a couple events and spends $1500+hst in a season.

Yes. The 1 and 2 family members pay full price, the 3 family member is 50% off, and the 4 and beyond train for free. This applies to immediate family enrolled at the same time.

No, this isn’t like a gym membership where you’re locked in for a year. Our official season runs from September 2026 to May 2027, and we offer two program terms. Term 1 is Sept. 14-Jan. 30, 2027 and Term 2 is from February 1-May 30, 2027.

Just like signing up for a soccer or hockey season, once you’re signed up for  the term, you’re in. We offer you a 30-day cancellation guarantee – from your first class, you have 30 days to cancel and get a refund (less the pro-rated amount for the time you were able to train).

Dragons can add on an extra class, either another core training class or the Chanbara specialty class. The majority of our Dragon students train once per week; for this age group that’s great but for those who are keen, they can add on an extra class.

Contact is light, age-appropriate, and increases gradually as students demonstrate control. There are safety gear
requirements and we prioritize student safety in the dojo.

When you arrive at the dojo shoes are removed at the entrance and in karate we train in bare feet. We have seating for guests in the dojo and we’ll give you an guest form to fill out.

The lesson reflects what we do in class. We’ll go over the safety rules and teach you how to bow. Then there will be a warm-up, a couple of karate techniques, and a self-defense lesson. We end the lesson with a fun drill and/or bag-work (hitting the bag).

We provide a safe and supportive environment for kids to develop balance, co-ordination, and flexibility.

Students will also build their confidence, learn self defense skills, develop their focus, and learn sportsmanship.

Caregivers are welcome to sit and watch the class. All electronics must be turned off and set aside during class and spectators must stay quiet.

Yes! Parents and caregivers are welcome to join their child’s age-specific class, or train in their own teen/adult
class.

Optional add-ons for students who want a specialty class – Weapons, Sparring, Combatives, or Chanbara, on top of their core program. These are invitations, not requirements: every student can go from white belt to black belt without adding anything extra on.

LOWER STRESS AND ANXIETY

Is Your Child Nervous? It's Normal

We know our younger students can have some big feelings. Some of them are excited and bouncing off the walls when they get here but others may need a little extra space to observe the environment and get comfortable.

Either way, our instructors have worked with a spectrum of abilities and our Dragons classes are designed for this age group.

You will see your child develop more self control, gain confidence, and strengthen their focus.

"I can’t say enough how much I love this place! My son is learning so much and his confidence has grown. There’s something so rewarding in watching your child learn and grow so quickly. I couldn’t ask for a better environment for my son."

"My girls joined Promar Karate as Dragons about 4 months ago. They absolutely love it! They have learned so much and love earning stripes on their belts. This is a great atmosphere for kids and families."
Lynzie Weber
Our family has been coming to Promar Karate for two years. Our oldest has a lot of energy and was having some big feelings; it's amazing how much calmer he is now. Last year we began sending our youngest to Dragons classes. One unexpected benefit is that they get along better at home! I’m glad we decided to try out a class.
